Wet nurses were the solution in the past, but we are free from that limitation now because we can purchase formula which is hardly a moral failing. I see it as a great good-- even though the one time I needed formula we found out a few weeks later that our baby was allergic to the milk and lost a full pound at under a year of age thanks to the formula-- but the hospital injected dye into me to check for internal bleeding after the car wreck and the baby could not nurse then, and then the seat belt damage meant I had to pump blood clots for over a month before the LESS damaged breast could be used to feed the baby. Luckily, I am a good milk cow and eventually returned to breast feeding-- but it could easily have gone the other way. But once we changed formula it was good and provided time for me to recover.

I guess what I am saying is problems with breast feeding are just as natural as breast feeding-- and unlike the past, we have a wide array of formula to choose from and our kids do fine-- we learned about the lactos intolerance the hard way, but even so, because formula comes in multiple forms, we were able to change it and eventually got the baby back on track.

Persons who get nasty over formula really don't know how good we have it! Formula is a good thing to have. It makes it possible for my sister, who adopted, to cuddle and feed her baby(breast feeding was never an option for her); formula means that a mother can take care of her own child, and not be forced to let another woman feed the baby-- Saint Therese the little flower's mother had to let her child live with another family because she could not feed Therese herself-- and that family did not live nearby. I am sure she would have loved to have good quality formula and to keep her little Therese with her.

I am sorry anyone criticized you for using formula. I am sorry someone was nasty to Cam about breast feeding in her van. Both are parenting decisions and not the business of anyone else. That is so incredibly disgusting. Ew, ew, ew - while you where in the privacy of your own car, none-the-less. I can quite see the mentality--it's out there, though less frequent. See comments on articles about moms breastfeeding in public: Mom says, "It's natural, and that what breasts were made to do," and another commenter says, "So's urinating, but I don't do it in public," etc.

Mind you, I don't agree in the least with that behavior (and how STUPID do you have to be to risk getting labeled as a sex offender because "oh no, a woman's breastfeeding in her own car!")--I just try to explain what he and his...charming...wife might have been thinking.

And on a longer note, thank you for not being nasty about formula feeding. I know so many women who tried so hard to breastfeed, me among them, and for whom it didn't work out. This week, a lot of us have begun to feel rather like punching bags: "Oh, so you had round after round of mastitis, a breast abscess, plugged ducts, and your kid was dangerously dehydrated at various points? Nursing was agonizing? You saw two lactation consultants and a half-dozen nurses, and they couldn't tell you what was wrong? Well, clearly you just didn't try hard enough!" Bonus points if you throw in faith-based references, for that extra Catholic guilt. Ugh. So, thanks. ;) I support other women's right to breastfeed in public, covered or uncovered, mind you; it's also seriously nice when someone suggests just maybe being as kind to those of us who never will. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8188078120365131355.post-40565548258340487392015-08-06T14:09:23.521-04:002015-08-06T14:09:23.521-04:00I'm in shock. Luckily, such unhappy examples are in the minority. The best recourse is to pray for their conversion and not let their behavior stop you from feeding your baby-- even if you then have to make a police report. Too bad you don't have a good quality dash cam. :) Annnoreply@blogger.com
