Fortunately they were able to reason with him before he actually went into the parking lot. The teacher said their other special case, an older student, simply keeps going. So I haven't had to worry about the water nearly as much. That said I know he's not water proof so we started him in swim lessons. Perhaps you can talk to your social worker about someone one-on-one teaching Maggie some basic swimming safety things like holding onto the side of the pool or floating on her back? I'm sure that would give you a little piece of mind if she understands through frequent repetition how to handle bodies of water. I know in our area it's very difficult to find an area that doesn't have a community pool near by and we have several friends who have pools too. My one friend doesn't even have his fenced (the doors are alarmed but not the greatest) so my kids have slipped out there without us realizing a couple of times. Thankfully they didn't get into the pool, but after that I said this summer at a minimum they both need to know what to if they do sneak out and slip in. I think he's planning on changing his alarm too.Deltaflutehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00489950329698009256noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8188078120365131355.post-38854429104586891542016-04-09T10:19:48.957-04:002016-04-09T10:19:48.957-04:00That's got to be frustrating because you'd...That's got to be frustrating because you'd definitely want him to be able to go outside, but be safe doing so.

I know after Maggie bolted from the doorway to our car (next to a busy road) we had a talk with her social worker again and the term "hands on" was used a lot about what the protocol is supposed to be when she's in an open area outside. Their ratio is one to one though, which makes that possible.

Right now we've been looking at houses and I find myself obsessing over proximity to water with every house we see. It's eliminated like 75% of the houses around because we can't be super close to a lake or river or pond.Cammie Dianehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07137080807945525006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8188078120365131355.post-50361233599148041312016-04-08T21:33:56.416-04:002016-04-08T21:33:56.416-04:00When HB tried to bolt out the gate, I had a chat w...When HB tried to bolt out the gate, I had a chat with the after-school lady. They don't have it in the budget for fencing (nor do I get the impression that she wants more fencing because she used the word "prison" to describe it). Her "solution" to the safety problem is to keep him indoors. *sigh* I'm not exactly happy with it. I think if you've got kids who bolt or wonder you should assign them an assistant just like they do during regular school hours. My other solution is a gps tracker. Of course this should be voluntary. Not all parents would be on board with their child having to wear a device that tracks them at all times and even then a child can bolt out into their parking lot and get hit in a matter of seconds. So frustrating. And believe it or not this is probably the best school to suit an integrated autistic student because they do have fencing (which they close during school hours but not after school).Deltaflutehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00489950329698009256noreply@blogger.com
