While all your kids, I'm certain, benefit from your example and tenacious determination to form their consciences, Maggie has a light in her eyes that I have seen in many children with autism. They glisten with delight and I saw it most when my special ed religious ed class made their First Eucharist. I practiced by taking them to Adoration (to test the waters with having them sit still in Mass) and found they have a wonderful gift for this devotion. (They also love the visual Rosary I created.) They still ask to go to the room with Jesus (our adoration chapel.) I hope to write a book on Autistic Spirituality and hope to use your blog entry here as an example. Such wonderful spiritual gifts should not be placed under a bushel (although strollers are acceptable in my mind.) Having a son with autism, I TOTALLY get where you're coming from on that one!

Pax!Maria T PhDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16935220304446302411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8188078120365131355.post-65993715517286471162015-12-16T17:57:31.910-05:002015-12-16T17:57:31.910-05:00As a soon-to-be parent and someone who has travele...As a soon-to-be parent and someone who has traveled for business, I just don't see how this will work for many parishes. I've taken a church-run shuttle to the church from a hotel and straight to the airport with my to-be-checked luggage. Their are churches (yes, Catholic ones) that own vans an run ministries for this sole purpose. Granted, this was on the west coast and further south than NC, but really, what are they hoping to accomplish?

Although, I must say, I wouldn't be heartbroken if camera's weren't allowed in Church. Unless in the hands of someone who is a professional and can be extremely reverential, they have no place in Mass.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18272783918468048176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8188078120365131355.post-48871844862196132282015-12-15T19:23:18.293-05:002015-12-15T19:23:18.293-05:00You would probably love our parish because we have...You would probably love our parish because we have a wonderful loving parish who accept alot of kids no matter what. Only at the old people mass (4:00 Saturday) might have problems with frownie faces. I silent church means no children and that is not a truly full church. Sometimes I have to keep myself from visibly smiling as the little voices make me remember when my children were small.

I understand that we have been blessed in this country for many years. There have not been many acts of violence (and even fewer of sectarian violence) in places of worship compared with the experiences of other countries. I understand that no place of worship wants to be the exception. If there is really the concern, there needs to be measures that are family friendly. I only had one small child at a time, but many of my friends have and do have more than one child in diapers at one time. Also, Maggie's stroller is not "just a stroller".

I hope and pray the members of this parish do speak out and if I hear of this spreading, I will definitely be making my voice heard. I guess I feel that the world isn't safe anywhere and we just have to do the best we can. But I am not scared of death, my soul is in good shape and I try to get to confession quickly if it isn't. If I were to be gunned down in Mass because of a diaper bag that would certainly be tragic but I really truly believe that 99.9% of people walking in a church with a diaper bag and stroller are probably not there to cause any harm. Are you so clueless as to be oblivious to the fact that banning diaper bags and, in some cases, strollers, presents a true hardship and would make it impossible for some families to attend Mass?" (It is also clear to me that this is the opinion of an unmarried, childless clergyman, but that post is for another time.)

I can already imagine the backlash this will bring from families in that paranoid parish.

We do, indeed, live in scary, difficult times. Nowhere is it written that being a Christian should be easy. But making it more difficult than it already is for parents trying their best to bring up their children in the faith, through their good example of attending Mass, is shortsighted, mean-spirited, and counterproductive.

Mariedixieaglehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12923834034976250382noreply@blogger.com
