Busy, Busy, Busy!

These last couple of weeks I've been running around so much that I haven't had much time to sit down and really think (about anything other than what I need to be doing right now!) or catch up on my Catholic news (or blog) reading. I have been reading a great book that I'm going to review very soon, but other than that (15 whole minutes a day) there hasn't been much down time.

Here's a quick update on what's been going on:

Gigi is still in the hospital and will be for a few more days. He had surgery to fix his broken hip, but they've decided to let his broken shoulder heal on its own. I got to see him yesterday a couple of hours before the surgery. After he gets out of the hospital he'll be at a rehabilitation place for a while (the nurses said a week, the rehabilitation people said a month... we're hoping a week!). Thanks to everyone for the prayers!

Paul started up his final year in his MA theology program this year, and is prayerfully trying to figure out what comes next. He's going to Rome to check out the Angelicum in January, but he's also applying to law schools in the US and studying for his LSATs when he's not studying or writing papers for his classes (or working!). On top of that he had knee surgery earlier this month, so he's been pretty busy lately!

I, however, should be much less busy as of Sunday morning! I've been getting ready for our town's Harvest Festival, crocheting, baking and making rosaries and jewelry (my excuse for this weeks mostly short little posts) for the booth I'll have there. Hopefully I'll have a little more time (and a little more sleep) next week. Now to get some rest before I'm up baking breads tomorrow morning.

Getting Ready for Halloween!

What could possibly be this scary?

Adventures in Couponing: October 12th, 2010

This was a big couponing week. My list was three pages long and my stack of coupons was gigantic!

Altogether the total after coupons used and coupons received was $54.83. Ouch! If you've read my posts before you know that the weekly total is usually less than $10 and about half the time I actually make money on my weekly couponing trip. However, I did buy paper towels and detergent and it's hard to get the price down too low on certain useful products (the paper towels and detergent were $30 with coupons!). I've noticed that most of the high value coupons I get are for things that aren't very necessary (how many free air fresheners can they give away each month?). It's harder to find coupons that are more than a dollar for things that you actually need!

There was one thing that I found rather ridiculous when looking at my couponing purchase stretching across the living room. When I added the price of the purchase to the amount I saved in sales and coupons (to get the full price, or what I would have paid if nothing had been on sale and there had been no coupons) it added up to $488.06. And that is ridiculous. There is no way the items in that picture are worth any amount even close to $400 (much less over it).

Now for a couple of my favorite sales (there's still time to rush over to CVS to get these deals!). The Dawn soap below is on sale this week for $.97! And if you can find the coupons from last months P&G coupon book (at least that's what I think that's where I found them...) they're only $.47 each!

The Chunky Soups below are going to be Paul's lunches when he drives down to The Big City for school. For some reason I usually only get the Healthy Request coupons, but this week I hit the jackpot and had coupons for 20 cans of soup (a handful of different coupons) that were all for the kinds of soups he likes (which also happen to be on sale!).

More air fresheners! These are on sale for $.88 and if you have this weeks RP you have a buy 3 get 3 coupon they're $.44 each. With all my extra bucks and $4 of $20s they ended up being free!

Then there was the couponing drama. I have a very understanding husband... He ended up at CVS 4 times yesterday fixing everything (actually 1 time for work 1 time couponing and twice to fix the mistakes!). Thanks honey!

When we got home from couponing yesterday I got to work scanning my purchase for the National Consumer Panel. One of the best parts about scanning and entering prices is that I've learned how important it is to pay attention to the prices that are charged at pretty much any store. A couple of months ago we noticed that every clearance item we'd bought at Walmart had rung up as full price (unfortunately we were home, an hour away, when we found out). Yesterday we were charged twice for our paper towels and the razors which were supposed to be $2.32 each after ECB back rang up as $11.79. After trying to get the razors to work out (they dropped the price to $9.99, but my coupons were gone because they'd already been used!) I finally just decided it wasn't worth the hassle and returned them. Paul ended up going back to CVS twice before it was worked but it was worth it (there's no way I'm going to pay that much for razor blades!).

And that is another week of couponing!

Daily Dose of Cuteness: Sadie Edition!

In the belly of the whale!

Daily Dose of Cuteness: Maggie Edition

Peekaboo!

Prayers for Gigi...

We have a prayer request tonight...

This afternoon Gigi (Sadie and Maggie's name for my grandpa, their great grandpa) fell and broke his hip and shoulder. A helicopter flew him to "The City" and he's having surgery tomorrow morning. Any prayers are greatly appreciated.

My High Value Coupon Snuggie

Most weeks I end up with coupons that make certain items free (and sometimes money makers!). And on a weekly basis this means that there's probably something in my basket that wouldn't be there if it wasn't free. One particular high value coupon ended up in my wallet last week, and while it wasn't something I would have bought on my own it was something I was ridiculously excited about. Paul thought it was pretty funny too. Here's the evidence:

The funniest part came however, when I went downstairs a couple of mornings ago to find Paul (who had made merciless fun of the fact that I was buying a snuggie) watching Wonder Pets with Sadie while working on law school applications, wearing my snuggie. I ran to find the camera, but by the time I had it the evidence had disappeared. So, for now, no picture of Paul wearing the snuggie...

Sadie loves cuddling up in it too! I think she uses it more than anyone else in the house!

Modest Dresses at Close-Out Prices

Wooohooo!

I very, very rarely buy clothing these days (for myself at least, Sadie is now a 4T and grows out of clothes as quickly as we can buy them...). And even more rarely do I buy new clothing. However, tonight when I got home there was a comment in the comment box suggesting Christa Taylor, a store that's online store is going out of business, as a site I might like. And I do (thank you Rebecca!). In fact, I was even tempted into buying a dress (the only post-baby dress I've bought since Maggie was born!). Here's the one I picked out!

For under $30 (including shipping!) it's a pretty good deal! And it'll be nice to have something cute and comfortable and new to wear to the craft fair/ festival I'll be selling jewelry and rosaries at this weekend!

Outfit of the Week

This weeks Outfit of the Week is extra special because it is currently on clearance at Mikarose!

This dress, which is listed as the "Alice" looks light and airy and fun and perfect for summer (which is probably why it's on clearance now that it's October!). It also comes in pink and (this is a big plus to me!) is machine washable!

Bishop of the Week: Archbishop John Nienstedt

As I began to read the article below from the NCRegister, this quote from Saint Thomas came to mind. To be more specific I thought of this part of the quote:
"Now it is manifest that he who adheres to the teaching of the Church, as to an infallible rule, assents to whatever the Church teaches; otherwise, if, of the things taught by the Church, he holds what he chooses to hold, and rejects what he chooses to reject, he no longer adheres to the teaching of the Church as to an infallible rule, but to his own will. Hence it is evident that a heretic who obstinately disbelieves one article of faith, is not prepared to follow the teaching of the Church in all things; but if he is not obstinate, he is no longer in heresy but only in error. Therefore it is clear that such a heretic with regard to one article has no faith in the other articles, but only a kind of opinion in accordance with his own will."
Quite simply, I still don't understand the whole "cafeteria Catholic" thing. If you believe that Christ spoke to Peter and said, "And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven." then it's all pretty cut and dry.

Christ established His Church with Peter. If you believe that He established His Church at that moment than you probably know that That Church comes down to us to the present day through apostolic succession and that He promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against it. And let's face it, God doesn't lie.

Now on to the Bishop of the Week! Archbishop John Nienstedt was saying Mass at Saint John's University Abbey Church when protestors attempted to take the focus of the Mass and transform it into something other than God. Here's part of the story (read the rest here!):

Homosexual Activists Confront Archbishop at College Mass
BY TIM DRAKE
REGISTER SENIOR WRITER
10/08/201

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — When St. Paul and Minneapolis Archbishop John Nienstedt was invited to celebrate Mass at St. John’s University’s Abbey Church on Sept. 26, the last thing he expected was a protest.

A protest is what he got.

In response, the archbishop upheld Church teaching, just as his predecessor Archbishop Harry Flynn did, by denying homosexual activists holy Communion and choosing to bless them instead.

According to St. John’s University spokesman Michael Hemmesch, the archbishop had been invited to celebrate Mass by the university’s president, Father Robert Koopman. Upon his arrival for Mass, said archdiocesan spokesman Dennis McGrath, the archbishop was informed by Koopman that there were many in attendance who were wearing rainbow pins, buttons, ribbons and sashes.

The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis has a policy in place that was first instituted by Archbishop Flynn and has been continued by Archbishop Nienstedt to deny the Eucharist to those who use Communion as a time for a political statement or protest.

According to the university’s student newspaper, The Record, the protest was organized by senior Ana Seivert, educational liaison for People Representing the Sexual Minority (PRiSM), who used e-mail to rally the university-sanctioned organization.

The Mass took place at the conclusion of the campus’ “Coming Out Week” activities. A group of approximately 25 students, staff and religious attended the Mass wearing rainbow paraphernalia.

“The Eucharist is a sacred time, and the Church does not permit someone to use the reception of Communion as a backdrop or stage for protests,” explained McGrath, director of communications for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. “The Vatican has spoken on that, and this is just a continuation of that policy.”

Archbishop Nienstedt was traveling out of the country and unavailable for comment. Diocese of St. Cloud Bishop John Kinney, where the incident took place, was unavailable for comment.

“We did not act in a political manner,” said Elizabeth Gleich, vice president of PRiSM via e-mail. “The second Archbishop Nienstedt denied us Communion he made it political.”

McGrath noted that nothing the archbishop did was “political,” but that he was merely following Church teaching.

In fact, PRiSM’s Seivert told The Record, “We did this because we needed to … make a statement.”

It's disturbing to think of men and women using the Mass as a political statement.

Yet perhaps even more disturbing is that the article goes on to say that following the Mass Benedictine Father Rene McGraw offered Mass for those students that had been refused communion by the archbishop... Way to go McGraw. Passing out communion to students who were admittedly trying to use a Mass for their own political purposes sounds like a great idea... I wouldn't want to explain that to God...

Nemo: My Latest Crocheting Project

I'm pretty excited about my newest crocheting project. Sadie is currently in love with Nemo. She has a very small stuffed clownfish that Nani bought her last year, but because he's so small he disappears on a weekly basis, only to be discovered several days later (particularly since Sadie's favorite game right now is "Finding Nemo"... she hides him and wants us to find him in the comforter and blankets on her bed). Earlier this week he was left at Nani's house again, and she decided to replace him with an orange crayon. Unfortunately the orange crayon didn't survive until lunch time on the day he became a favorite. He met an untimely end when Sadie carried him up the stairs. She was pretty upset.

That same day I had a meeting in a little town about an hour away. Before I walked out the door I grabbed some orange and white cotton thread and a crocheting needle and began to formulate a plan. I began crocheting a circle for the middle of "Nemo's" body and worked back to the tail and then started again from the middle and crocheted towards the front. By the end of the two hour round trip drive Nemo's body was finished, along with most of his fins. Today I found some stuffing and sewed up the many loose ends.

And Sadie is in love. Here is her new best friend:

Not bad for a beginning crocheter without a pattern! And Sadie has a new toy that didn't cost us a dime (actually is I went back and added up the cost of this 100% cotton yarn that I bought on clearance at Walmart earlier this year he cost around $1.00!)!

Smarter Than the Average Bear: Vote Haney For Trinity County Sheriff

Vote for Bruce Haney for Trinity County Sheriff and get Real Life Experience

We've had an interesting week, but for now I'll just post my letter to the editor with a brief explanation about my inspiration for writing it. It was published in our local paper this morning, alongside three other letters supporting Bruce Haney for Sheriff.

Last week in the paper the Cox Campaign's ad seemed to question whether Bruce Haney had the education that would be required to act as Sheriff for our little county.

You see, Bruce's father died when he was fourteen and he went to work immediately to support his family. After graduating from high school (and working simultaneously) he went into carpentry before finding his passion helping others after going on a ride along with police officers in LA and witnessing two violent crimes. He then went to work for the LAPD before finally becoming Marshall in our little town.

Dear Editor,

Growing up as the daughter of two educators I learned early on that education is important. But as many of us learn as we go through life, there is more than one way to acquire knowledge and while the knowledge that comes from opening a book and turning the pages is valuable, we often find that the knowledge that comes from living life teaches us far more and is ultimately invaluable.

Who we are and who we become can be influenced greatly by formal education, but more often I’ve found that the moments that shape lives and characters are the unexpected ones that pop up as we go about our days, when we make hard choices and decide whether or not to take the easy route or the hard one.

A man may learn far more as he works his way through life, working to help others, to provide for his family and to keep his community safe than he could ever have learned sitting behind a desk in a classroom reading about theoretical scenarios in a book.

Experiential learning and the school of hard knocks can be difficult teachers, but the lessons learned will tell a man far more about himself and his relationship to the world around him than anything he could have absorbed in a formal setting. Experience teaches courage and moral strength and helps a man understand what he is capable of and the importance of integrity.

Bruce Haney may not have as many expensive pieces of paper hanging on his office wall, but he has the life experience and the heart, courage and background that we need in a leader in this community. He is the right choice for Trinity County Sheriff.

Sincerely,

Cam

Learning Italian with Muzzy

A couple of days ago Sadie was playing in the living room and as I listened she started talking to herself. After rambling on a bit I heard her say: "One, two, three..." then a pause before: "Uno, dos!" and another pause followed by "un, deux, trois!" The next day as she started climbing up the stairs she said, "one, two... dos!" But when she heard me telling Nani what she'd said she said, in a rather exasperated voice, "Three!"

For a couple of weeks now we've been watching the Muzzy DVDs together as a family each evening. Muzzy is the BBC's language program. When I bought the program we thought we were just getting one language, but we were excited to receive the program set and find that when you order English, Spanish, French, Italian or German, you receive a DVD with all five languages on the same set of disks. You can also order Russian or Mandarin separately, but the five language set is definitely the best deal if you're interested in learning more than one language!

We usually watch Italian together most nights, but every now and then we throw in French (we picked French to watch with Italian because it was close but, we're hoping, not so close as to be really confusing). Hopefully Paul will have picked up enough Italian to help him this January when he travels to Rome!

I was a little skeptical when I first read a description of the story line before purchasing the DVDs. The story is pretty silly. The main characters are the king, queen, princess, king's advisor, gardener and Muzzy, the big green clock eating alien from outer space. The gardener and princess are in love, but the king's advisor also loves the princess. When the gardener is thrown in jail after the king and queen find out that he loves the princess he meets Muzzy the clock eating alien, who is there because he ate a bunch of parking meters. At the same time the king's advisor decides to use a computer program to print out a new princess, who loves him, but the program breaks and starts printing out dozens of princesses. It just gets sillier and sillier from there.

But, most likely because of the silliness, Sadie instantly loved it! And while there are only three short story DVDs (there is a lot of other material that comes with it, from CDs to vocabulary DVDs) I've been surprised by how much they pack into each episode and at how effectively the program seems to be working.

I think it does help that we're using it together as a family and that we've been trying to use what we've learned.

Sadie's little sponge like brain seems to be absorbing so much! When I said "susina" she ran into the kitchen and started trying to climb up on the counter to reach a plum! This program may not make any of us fluent in Italian, but it's definitely a step in the right direction!

Called By God to Serve

Our vocation is the call that we receive from God that is intended to ultimately lead us towards salvation. Our vocation is, at the most basic level, who we are called to serve.

In our modern world this is hardly a popular idea. In a time when navel gazing has been raised to an art form the idea that the path towards salvation and a relationship with our creator might require service and the rejection of a self centered lifestyle is foreign. Ease and convenience and luxury are lifted up as modern day gods. Obedience and service are looked down upon and equated with weakness.

For those of us called to the vocation of marriage it is clear who we are called to serve and love. Through our vocation as husband and wife we draw closer to God as we turn from the selfish impulses that pop up daily and make tiny sacrifices day in and day out. We live as a family, helping each other grow in holiness.

It isn’t easy, but can we really expect that something of real, eternal value would be easy? Jesus’ description of the path we are to follow certainly doesn’t sound like a walk in the park. It doesn’t sound like mouthing empty words and getting a free pass. Yet it is what we’re made for, which is why the emptiness of things can never fill the longing for something more that is engrained in all of us.

We are all called to love. We are all called to serve. And it is through this service that God draws us to Him.

Often the path is difficult and tiring. Service is tiring. We cannot rely on our own human strength, which is bound to fail. Yet we know as we follow God’s plans for our lives that we can depend on his strength as we live out His calling in our lives.

Once we realize the importance of such a calling, it is, quite simply, insanity to put it aside.

At its base it’s really quite simple. How will we answer God’s call in our life? There are only two choices:

Serviam or Non Serviam.

Sadie's Hard at Work Cleaning and Couponing

The other day Sadie came over and told me that she was upset because there was a spider web (no spider) under the dining room table. After she went over to "tell" Paul the same thing (and tried to pull him off the couch while he was resting his recently operated on knee) I called her over and gave her a wipe and told her that if she wanted to clean under the table she could. She was very careful at first because she didn't want to actually touch the spider web.

Then she decided that it was actually kind of fun to clean the kitchen! In fact, it was so much fun that she helped me clean up after dinner. She wiped down her little booster seat and the chair that it was under and was very proud of herself for helping. She did the same thing tonight while we were at Nani and Grumpa's too!

Then she got down to work couponing. She already knows that couponing is very serious business and that Sunday, when the coupons arrive, is a very important day!

And what was her favorite coupon? She immediately recognized a coupon for hot dogs in the Safeway ad and kept showing it to me over and over again.

I know what she's hoping I'll buy next time we go shopping!

Daily Dose of Cuteness: Peekaboo!

The Dangers of Toddler Wrangling

The picture below shows the result of a Time-Out incident from earlier today. While Sadie is 99% over her biting (there were several months where we definitely had a "biting problem" but she hadn't bitten anyone is over a month...) today there was an incident. She had spent the day with the main goal of waking up her sister by shrieking every time she noticed that Maggie had dozed off (after all, Maggie has to be awake to play with her!). After something like a half dozen attempts at waking her sister this way it was time for a time out. Sadie apparently didn't agree with that!

Despite the fact that I was wearing a long sleeved shirt at the time, this was the result:

Ouch!

Today's Bread Disaster: Baking Soda is not Baking Powder

If you've ever looked at a recipe and thought "I wonder if I could substitute baking soda for baking powder" I can now tell you that the answer is a resounding "absolutely not" (although apparently pretty much everyone in the world knew the answer to that question except for me!).

I attempted to bake a tea bread recipe that I've been really excited about this morning. Half way through I realized that I couldn't find my baking powder. Now I'm 99% sure that I picked up baking powder last time I went food shopping, but I couldn't seem to find it this morning. As I looked at hte baking soda I thought "how different can it really be? I might as well give it a try."

Yuck. The most disgusting bread is now sitting in the kitchen (as soon as I get up the energy I'll go take it to the garage and toss it out). Tomorrow I plan on giving the recipe a second try.

There just doesn't seem to be as much wiggle room in baking as there is in cooking. At least there isn't when, like me, you have no idea what you're doing!

Our Bald Eagle Visitor

I snapped these pictures today while we were at Nani and Grumpa's house. The eagle swooped down into a tree next to the house and then flew into another tree across the dirt road to eat his dinner.

A Day of Quilts

Our little town holds special events most weekends in autumn. Next weekend is the salmon festival (which I'm hoping will include the FFA pumpkin patch for Sadie!) and the weekend after that is the Harvest Festival. This weekend, however, is always my favorite. Today was the Quilt Festival. I snapped these pictures as we were driving through town this morning. Quilt's line both sides of the freeway (the freeway is Main Street here!):

Every year I promise myself I'll make a quilt to enter. So far I haven't followed through since we moved up here. And a lot of my quilting material have become dresses for Sadie!

There are so many talented quilters in our area. The quilt section of the county fair each year takes up a huge area and is just fantastic to walk through... unfortunately Sadie was only interested in the tractors this year and had a tantrum when we tried to walk through the quilt area... but at least we got to see some of them today!

The heart quilt in the picture above was my favorite this year!

More quilts!

Safe and Secure

After our scare earlier this week I've taken the very good advice I received and am installing alarms on our windows. My favorite part of the alarms may be the fact that they came with stickers to put on the windows to warns of an alarm system!

I've always thought of alarms as extremely expensive (not sure why!) and I was shocked when I started looking at them online and saw how affordable they were.

Nani and Grumpa picked up some at Home Depot yesterday and we'll be installing them this afternoon!

I feel safer already!

Daily Dose of Cuteness: Sisters!

Sadie's getting the hang of being a big sister!

The Wonder Wraps Are Here!

The Wonder Wraps arrived! And while they are in "Mandarin" and "Lime" I'm still thrilled! They may not be the prettiest diaper covers in the world, but they are my favorites and they work! And at this point (and at every point in my diapering experience) working is much more important than having a cute little pattern or pretty colors (although I do wish there were diapers wraps that had both in equal measure!).

At not quite 3 months (a few more days!) and over 16 lbs (!) Maggies is a big girl! I have a feeling these two are going to be towering over me before they hit middle school years!

The winner can decide between pink, white, off white or grey glass pearls! The rosary will look something like this:

Now for the rules!

Thomist Speaks..

Once in a while Thomist, who is a kind-of guest blogger on A Woman's Place (he gives a man's perspective!) writes in. And sometimes his comments deserve there own post. Here's todays:

Anonymous,

Reading your posts is a good exercise in abnormal psychology.

First, we read that you think children should never be slandered.

Second, we read that in this particular case of the Haney child it is allowable because other children, at a school in which the Haney child no longer attends, "say" she is talking disparagingly about their school.

Third, you then proceed to hold the minor as more morally culpable than the adult. Keep in mind that you have only hearsay for information on the child and photographic evidence for the adult. Furthermore, you disregard the fact that one is a child and the other is AN ADULT.

Fourthly, you then sympathize with this adult who is drawing negative attention to herself by attacking children. You begin to claim that others who just happen to be holding her responsible for what in truth is morally repugnant and evil are violating her first amendment rights. I am glad to see that relativism is alive and well in Trinity County. Common sense on the other hand seems to be taking a back seat to the afore mentioned relativism.

Anonymous, most people would look at this woman who slanders children by car propaganda and see her as a complete psycho. This psychopath then wonders why people stop to look at her. Perhaps she even wonders why others might take pictures of this freak-show. Instead of realizing this woman for what she is, either A. crazy or B. evil; you have raised her up to be some sort of political martyr.

If you want the "stupid chatter" to end I recommend being quite. Look at what is being said by both candidates and their supporters. If a maniac who paints political messages all over her car can convince you to muddy the clear waters perhaps democracy is too complicated for you. Now open your eyes and stop being dense.
