How to Make Your Very Own Mermaid Tail: A Tutorial

Have you thought about making your own mermaid tail?

I began making mermaid tails because my four year old daughter loves mermaids, but wasn't a fan of the sensory socks they used at OT.  I knew that if she tried one she would love to sensation, but she couldn't be convinced to climb in.

I had a feeling if I turned the sock into a tail that she could wear she would benefit from it.  So I started sewing and quickly discovered that my other kids loved the mermaid tails too.

You don't need a pattern to make this mermaid tail.  Here are step by step instructions that take you from measuring through sewing, so that you can create your very own custom tail.

To make this tail I used about a yard of spandex, three feet of elastic and a little less than 2 square feet of felt.

The top of the fin usually measure about half the width of the bottom of the tail when I cut out my fin.  We'll pleat the tail later so that it matches.

  1. What a great - easy to follow tutorial. I must admit my first response to the title was "I don't know why I would WANT a mermaid tail" but after reading it I am sure both my daughters would be overjoyed to have me lug out the sewing machine! Coming to you from CWBN.

    1. Thank you! I've been amazed at how excited the kids get about them (even though there are already so many laying around the house!). Whenever a new mermaid tail appears everyone wants to wear it!

  2. Such a cute idea. What kind of fabric did you use?

    1. Thank you! And thank you for adding this question because I just added the answer up above too! I knew I was forgetting something. I used around a yard of spandex for this one, about three feet of elastic and about 2 feet of felt.

  3. It amazes me that you can a. sew so well and b. do it with children around! Bravo! I used to love sewing, but I find it so hard with kids. You are a master!

    1. Thank you! They definitely make it a challenge to fit in. If there wasn't late night sewing around here there would be no sewing at all!

    2. I love the "7 times for Maggie, 5 for Sadie, 3 for Patch" line - gotta love just how different those kids are! I have a feeling if I tried these everybody would just end up slipping on the floor and bashing their heads ;)

    3. So true! And I have a goal, somewhere in the next few months, of coming up with a pattern/tutorial for a mermaid tail that's open at the bottom. It would be so much more practical... but I'm not sure how Maggie will react since it won't be a "real" mermaid's tail.
