Extended Breastfeeding "Chaotic" and "Harmful"?

I was just directed to this blog post from a friend's facebook page and I'm pretty horrified by what I just read. I can't imagine what this poor mother and daughter must be going through at the moment. Here's one of the "highlights" from the article that the post is based on:
"Four days ago, the Madrid Institute for Minors and Families (IMMF), decided to separate a little girl from her mother for not complying with the objectives of a psychotherapy program and "maternal abilities" that imply to abandon extended breastfeeding and breastfeeding on demand because it is considered "chaotic" and "harmful for every boy and girl". With these considerations all lacking scientific or legal facts, they force mothers to take medication to cease milk production..."
The original article is in Spanish and can be read here.

  1. Wow...thanks for the info...I'm stunned speechless....especially since I'm still breastfeeding my 16 month old. That sort of thing should not happen especially since the Pediatricians in Spain and in Madrid have said otherwise. Apparently Spanish entities have not united on this issue.

Sort of reminds me a little bit about the AAP (American academy of pediatrics) saying children under the age of 2 should not watch any tv yet NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) says it's totally fine. NAEYC accredits day cares and preschools. They're the largest early education accrediter and carry heavy weight.

But taking away a kid because they can't keep their facts straight...wow. So not cool.

  2. Yeah I haven't posted it to my blog yet (need too) but I was shocked when I saw it too. So sad...

  3. I pray all the time that this kind of interference in family life will stop, though I shudder to think how it's progressing worldwide.

I don't have children yet, but my master's degree and work experience is in childhood studies, and the one thing I know is that there is nothing harmful in breastfeeding a child even for years and years. Most mammals breast feed until the first set of teeth fall out - that's why they're nicknamed "milk teeth!" If that isn't an indication of biological normalcy, I don't know what is.

I love comments and I read every single comment that comes in (and I try to respond when the little ones aren't distracting me to the point that it's impossible!). Please show kindness to each other and our family in the comment box. After all, we're all real people on the other side of the screen!
