A Secret Project Unveiled!

There's a new project I've been secretly hard at work on. It all began when one of the presents Paul got me for my birthday (the other was the beautiful veil that I love!) arrived... it had taken nearly a month to get here... and it was a beautiful snood from my favorite snood shop... and it was falling apart... The stitches were sloppy... There were strings hanging out everywhere. And when I put it on, it hadn't been sewn quite right (in more than one way) so it wrinkled. We were both disappointed because this was a shop we'd ordered from before a couple of times and I've always been able to give it rave reviews... As I turned the snood over in my hand one thought came to mind... I could do a better job than this...

And that is the moment that this idea was born.

I put the snood away and went to my sewing machine with scissors, pins and a piece of fabric leftover from my last dress. I cut and pinned and estimated and created a pattern. A lot of guessing was involved. And amazingly, my first try did actually turn out to be a snood. I'm going to wear it this week and see how it holds up to wear and tear and see what needs to be changed or improved upon. Here's Snood #1:

I have a picture in my head of the snoods that are to come: some are colorful like the one pictured, some are dainty and some are simple. All will be carefully made to stand up to tugging toddler hands and the rigors of everyday life. This snood, as shown, is actually pictured with my hair down to see if it could hold up the weight (which pulls most snoods off) and it actually did.

So that's a sneak peak of what I'm working on! There will be more to come (both of snoods and dolls and chaplets) soon!

  1. Nice. Hope you are over the migraine & prayers for Paul as he keeps working on his big paper. God bless. -Cliff

  2. So I bought a scarf to wear, but I haven't worn it to mass yet, because I can't get it to stay on my head (stupid polyester!) and I have no bobby pins (I know, how do I not have these?). So this new project of yours is exciting for me, because my children (not just toddlers come to think of it) tug relentlessly. :) I look forward to seeing more. :)

  3. Oooh, snoods, so cool!! If I could find a pattern, I would make some of my own. They are so hard to find lately...Look forward to seeing which ones you have to sell. I love the polka dots, so pretty!

  4. That's cute and very retro looking. I don't cover my head at Mass, but if I did, I could see myself wearing that in fun prints.

  5. You're KILLIN' me, CAM! I wish we lived closer so you could SHOW me this stuff! My goal is to learn to make snoods so I can make my own! Are you able to dumb down your instructions enough for a beginner (I need a word other than "beginner" to show you how awful I am at sewing...) so I can give it a go?!

E-mail me if you don't mind sharing!

    Great job--looks great!

  8. AUUUGGHHHHH!! You inspired me to give this a go--and guess what?! I MADE ONE! In less than 30 minutes! Can't wait to compare notes and see how I can improve on this--BUT I FREAKIN' SEWED SOMETHING BY MYSELF, WITHOUT A PATTERN, AND WITHOUT SCREWING IT UP! HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!! (And other such maniacal laughter.) And it all started with your post--so, thanks! :-) Yours is way prettier, by the way. I'm rocking a black crushed velvet with white (that's right--"white" means I'm too impatient to go find black) thread snood. :-)

  9. Nice!

Btw - I made it through Lent covering at Mass and plan to keep going. Thanks so much for that final kick/push lol.

  10. Yay MK for making it through Lent (and for keeping going!)! That's so great!

And that is so great Delena!!!! I have to admit that I didn't have any white thread a couple of weeks ago and so my white dress with black spots has this thick, almost unusable black thread that I used on it... but it actually ended up looking like it was on purpose! Congrats on the successful sewing project!

  11. What shop was it? I purchased 4 recently and ithe workmanship was very poor, not to mention it took almost 3 months to arrive with no notice, apology or anything from the seller. I was very disappointed with my experience.

  12. The shops initials are G. of G. I've avoided posting the name though because I'm hoping it was a fluke... although I had read some negative reviews in the past...

  13. Good job. Your finished product looks great.

You might want to make a caul. I made one for myself and sewed hair combs into the brim. I loved it. Here is a tutorial: http://www.elizabethancostume.net/headwear/caulmake.html

One of my favorite self directed sewing tutorial sites is this one: http://www.elizabethancostume.net/index.html
You could make some pretty dresses for your handmade dolls with it. This is a massive website with more projects than you could probably make in a decade.

  14. I am excited to see you head coverings as I can't afford g******* of g****, although beautiful. It also took a long time to receive order. Also, I miss the styles they offered a few years ago.

  15. NO! Don't tell me it's G. of G.! I just ordered two from them the other day! :-(

  16. I know what shop your talking about. Did you return it for a refund? How awful! I love looking at their coverings and have ordered from them a few years ago, I bet it was a fluke but they should be alerted to it anyway, so they can be more vigilant on quality control.

I like your snood - can't wait for the tutorial!
