Bio-Oil is Fantastic!

I have discovered a new product that I absolutely love and had to share with any pregnant moms out there (or anyone with dry skin!). I have super dry skin. During pregnancy it becomes even more dramatically dry. And since both pregnancies have gone through winters, which is when my skin becomes even drier, the entire situation has been more than a little annoying.

When I was pregnant with Sadie I had a lot of time on my hands (and a bit more money to invest in the problem). I tried out pretty much every over the counter pregnancy product for dry skin that I came across. I would alternate between applying baby oil once a day and several different lotions that all promised to be the cure for dry skin one or two times a day. They helped a little, but it definitely wasn't a dramatic improvement.

Sadie has inherited my dry skin. From a very early age we had the exact same problem searching for a lotion or oil that worked and keeping her away from things with strong perfumes that made her break out in hives. We tried quite a few before one of my friends sent us a package that included a little baby lotion made by Burt's Bees. We use that on her every night after her bath and sometimes in the morning too. She still has fairly dry skin, but it's much better than it would be otherwise. Because of our success I tried out a Burt's Bees lotion too and it was better than the speciality lotions I used last time around, but it still wasn't spectacular...

Fast forward to this past week. It was time for CVS to give out their quarterly (I think) Give Back Bucks (or whatever they're called). Paul gave them to me as a little addition to my birthday present and I went to CVS for my every-two-year-lip gloss-and-eye shadow spending spree (makeup is definitely not a spending priority around here). Two lip glosses and an eye shadow later I received the Cover Girl special discount, which meant I'd gotten $8 in CVS bucks back (and had done my little mental savings/ coupon dance!).

I slipped the receipt carefully into my purse and thought and thought about what I should spend the coupon on. Since the coupon had come from my birthday present I didn't feel terrible about spending it on something frivolous. And then I remembered seeing the little display in the very back of the store for Bio-Oil.

Now I have wanted to try Bio-Oil since I first saw there advertisements towards the end of my last pregnancy. However, I was rather skeptical that it could really make any difference (since nothing else has) and I didn't want to spend $16 on a little bottle of oil that probably wouldn't work (after all, nothing else had!). At half price though I decided that it couldn't hurt to just try it out. After all, what were the chances it would make a difference when compared with all the other products I'd tried.

I've now been using Bio-Oil for three days and it has made a huge difference! My skin isn't dry at all! It's so soothing! All I can say is that it works! I can't vouch for the stretch mark preventative promises yet, but since it does make my skin feel so nice, it might very well deliver on that promise as well! I had a few little scars on my leg and I was skeptical that the oil would make any difference at all, but after this short amount of time they already look about half as dark as they did when I first put the oil on (and in my book that's pretty amazing!).

Paul did point out yesterday that his store carries a generic version that has the same ingredients, so I'm going to try that out when I run out of my current bottle. I'll give anyone who's interested an update in a few weeks (or however long it takes me to go through my current bottle) if that works as well as the Bio-Oil! Hopefully it does! If not, this might be one pregnancy investment that is worth making!

  1. I'm a big fan of good oils for skin too. I've not tried bio oil so I don't know what's in it, but I use Nutiva coconut oil for washing my face (yes washing) and as an after shower body oil. I also use it as a pre shampoo for my hair which is naturally curly and very dry. The oil keeps the shampoo from over stripping my hair. Though I mostly use the straight up coconut oil, when I remember to I make a mixture of the coconut oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil, cocoa butter and shea butter. This blend is GREAT for my kiddos eczema and for winter dry skin, it can be a deep oil treatment for hair a makeup remover and a lip balm and a bath oil. I love that it doesn't have any weird stuff in it. I also love that I can make many many batches of it from small sizes of products for a fraction of the cost of purchased oils or lotions. So, if you're so inclined you could also try to make your very own oil!

  2. I've been looking for something to help with Susi's dry skin too. I might have to give that a try.
