Name that Saint

I ran across this picture yesterday filed under a thread about beautiful and ugly churches. It's from a cathedral in California (extra points if you can guess which one!). So can you name this saint (let's just say, this is not by far, my favorite depiction of this particular saint...)? In fact, I really dislike it.

Paul's first guess was Saint Martin de Porres. What do you think?

(I'll announce the answer later in the combox!)

  1. Oooh... I know! I just got back from Our Lady of Angels Cathedral and saw this unusual likeness of the Blessed Virgin!

  2. Hehe....I cheated and looked on the thread. It's supposed to be Mary? Where's her sleeves, her veil, her long hair? Where are the graceful folds of her dress, the sweet, serene look on her face? Where is the snake under her foot? The mantle around her shoulders? It's disgraceful, it really is. It makes me so sad.

  3. Well, my first thought was Junipero Serra, but he's only a blessed. So I guess I'll go with St. Francis of Assisi...

  5. based on the image shared, i'm guessing it's the Cathedral of Christ the Light.

i'll let others guess about the statue but here's a hint.....notice what the statue/st. is standing on.

    ....pray for us!!!

  7. Though I first thought St. Joan of Arc, with the short hair, it is (as I discovered through sneaky online detective work, at which I excel) a truly awful rendition of Mary, at Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. Yikes!

  8. That's The Blessed Virgin?!!?? It looks very androgynous...I don't like it! Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.

  9. I would guess St. Joan of Arc, since this *is* the anniversary of her martyrdom.
