I love comments and I read every single comment that comes in (and I try to respond when the little ones aren't distracting me to the point that it's impossible!). Please show kindness to each other and our family in the comment box. After all, we're all real people on the other side of the screen!

ReplyDeleteThis boy appears well-rounded, and that's great. It seems like his parents have done a great job of balancing homeschooling with appropriate opportunities for socialization and personal growth.
ReplyDeleteI think it's **very** important that traditional/typical homeschoolers (with, you know, a curriculum, a school year and a pretty firm daily schedule, homework, assesments, etc.) differentiate themselves from the growing ranks of "unschooling" families. I know several families that essentially let their kids do what they want and do not offer any formal curriculum and have no academic expectations for their children. They are perfectly okay with a child not reading until 8 or 9 years of age, or "whenver he shows an interest." These unschooling parents often get a rise out of being "that family" with the radical ideas and countercultural child-rearing practices and new-age ideals. And those are the families that are giving all the other homeschoolers a bad name.

This was an enjoyably amusing video. Really liked the laundromat analogy. I had to crack up laughing about the living in a remote wilderness in a log cabin comment... ah, when hubby retires for good we WILL be living in his family's log cabin in a remote area! Luckily, there is a lot of home schooling support in the area even if you have to travel a bit for it.
